After an extended amount of time, punctuated with final exams, graduation, and the quitting of my job of 5 years, I am finally able to regain a sense of time. While the thought of posting crossed my mind continuously, it seemed I always was running out of time. In objection of giving up my beloved sleep I forewent the opportunity to post...
As of now, my time is mostly spent planning and preparing for my trip to Thailand and Malaysia. With our departure date approaching in 2 weeks, I have begun to grasp the fact I am ACTUALLY going to be gone almost the entire summer! As well as this realization, my excitement has started to turn into anxiousness. I cannot lie, I am beginning to become very wary of the fact that I speak not 1 single word of Thai or Malay. While yes, many people speak English I find it so utterly rude and inconsiderate for me as an American to expect I can get by without. And even as I try to learn some of the basic phrases (hello, good-bye, please/thank you, excuse me, etc) I find myself lost and frustrated.
In order to appease my worries, I did what any smart traveler should do: Research. Reading from many different travel books, I found many helpful hints and culturally attuned ways to enjoy a culture I know almost nothing about. Amidst my readings, I found something truly insightful though: "Whatever you do, DO NOT wear a bright colored fanny pack. You will get robbed." :) This made me laugh out loud and reminded me I am not a total idiot in the world of travel. "Duh" was my reaction.
As preparations and more news becomes available, current updates will be added.
